NU Wrestlers Open 2004 With a Win
Jan. 9, 2004
YPSILANTI, Mich.--John Velez (Kings Mills, Ohio/Kings) and Matt Delguyd (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Mayfield) each won by technical fall to lead Northwestern to a 22-18 win over Eastern Michigan Friday night. Velez--who has been on a roll recently, winning the Beast of the East and taking fourth at the Midlands Wrestling Championships--routed Matt Cole 18-3 in their match at 125 lbs. "John had an outstanding match," said head coach Tim Cysewski, whose team improves to 7-1 this season. "He is definitely in the groove right now." Delguyd, meanwhile, defeated Tony Lyssiotis 19-4 in an equally impressive victory at 197 lbs. His technical fall produced NU's first points of the evening, allowing the 'Cats to cut Eastern Michigan's lead to three (8-5). Mike Kimberlin (Bradley, Ill./Bishop Martin McNamara) also had a big win, taking down 157-pound rival Chad Rousch 13-6. That gave Northwestern a 22-15 advantage heading into the final match, and the Wildcats were able to hang on. "Mike did a nice job tonight--he looked fantastic," said Cysewski. "He is a real warrior out there." Despite these three bigs wins, NU lost half of the bouts but still was able to edge the Eagles, who fall to 1-3. "We seemed a little big sluggish overall, but I am happy we came out with a win," said Cysewski. "We will need more intensity in future matches." One future match will be at 2 p.m. this Sunday, when the Wildcats challenge Eastern Illinois (4-5) in Charleston, Ill. Results
174 -- Tim Hoff (EMU) def. Andrew Curran (NU), 5-2 (3-0)
