GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Northwestern turned in the third best team round of the day and its best of the tournament to finish in sixth place at the 35th Annual Furman Intercollegiate Invitational on Sunday. The 32nd-ranked Wildcats shot a 6-over 294 to finish 35-over (299-306-294=899) for the tournament, 16 strokes behind the host Paladins, who won the tournament by two strokes over Virginia Tech.
Junior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) fired a 2-under 70 and finished in eighth place at 5-over (74-77-70=221). He opened the fall season with a career-best fourth-place effort at the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational in Toledo.
Freshman David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union), who was playing in his first tournament as a member of NU's official five-man team, finished 16th at 7-over (73-76-74=223).
Seniors Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) and Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif/Del Campo), placed 34th and 40th, respectively. Strunk shot an 11-over 227 (75-77-75) while Johnson was 12-over (77-76-75=228). Freshman Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) finished 107th with a 26-over 242 (80-77-85).
Three other members of the NU golf team participated in the tournament as individuals: freshman Scott Weber (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) placed 91st with a 21-over 237; senior T.C. Ford (Covington, La./Mandeville) was 101st with a 24-over 240; and sophomore Bryson Young (Reno, Nev./Galena) was 113th with a 31-over 247.
The Wildcats take a week off before returning to action Saturday and Sunday, April 10-11 at the Boilermaker Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.
