GREENVILLE, S.C. -- After a month-long hiatus, Northwestern's men's golf team returned to action at the 35th Annual Furman Intercollegiate Invitational on Friday. The Wildcats, ranked 38th in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll, are sitting eighth after the first 18 holes, 13 strokes back of the host school, which holds a seven-stroke advantage over Virginia Tech.
Northwestern was paced by freshman David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union), who was playing in his first official collegiate event. (He did participate in NU's Windon Memorial Classic last fall, but he was competing as an individual and not a part of NU's official team.) Merkow shot a 35 on the front nine and a 38 on the back for a 1-over 73. He is tied for 13th place, four strokes off the lead.
Junior Dillon Dougherty (Woodland, Calif./Woodland) and senior Casey Strunk (Phoenix, Ariz./Thunderbird) fired respective rounds of 74 and 75. Dougherty is in 19th place; Strunk is in 32nd place.
Senior Tom Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Del Campo) had a sub-par round, shooting a 5-over 77. He had shot 76 or better in his previous 12 rounds, with six of those rounds coming under par. Johnson is tied for 56th place.
Freshman Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) rounded out the NU contingent, shooting an 8-over 80. He is in 92nd place.
Second-round play is set to start Saturday morning.
