ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - At Lobo Field Friday morning in Albuquerque, N.M., New Mexico's Sean Murray hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 13th inning, as the University of New Mexico knocked off Northwestern, 6-5. It was the first of three games NU will play in Albuquerque at the DKD Electric Shootout.

Friday's game was the second 13-inning game NU has played this season. The 'Cats beat Troy State 6-1 back on Feb. 28.

The Wildcats struck first, as Travis Tharp (Boulder, Colo./Boulder) hit a two-run home run to right center that scored Mark Ori (Niles, Ill./Maine South). Junior Dan Pohlman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) followed with a solo shot to left field, making it 3-0 NU.

The Lobos responded with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Matt Young bunted to reach base, and was followed by Dusty Young's double to left center that scored Matt Young. Murray doubled to score the Dusty Young, making the score 3-2.

New Mexico added three runs in the bottom of the 5th inning when Dusty Young hit a two-run RBI double down the left field line and Josh Mader's single plated Murray, to give the Lobos a 5-3 lead.

The Wildcats tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the 6th inning as Pohlman doubled to right field to score Tharp and Jon Mikrut's (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) single scored Pohlman.

Then for the next six innings, the two teams battled to a stalemate, with both teams unable to capitalize on their chances to win.

New Mexico loaded the bases in the bottom of the 8th inning with no outs, but Wildcat Dan Brauer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) retired Jeff Grady, Mike Svetlic and Matt Young consecutively to get out of the jam. Again in the 10th, the Lobos had two runners in scoring position, but Cory Lizarraga was caught at 2nd base on an A.J. Spitaleri pinch hit single and Svetlic grounded out to second base to again help the Wildcats evade any runs scored.

In the bottom of the 13th, Matt Young reached base on a walk, Dusty Young reached on a fielder's choice and Murray's single down the left field line off of Northwestern reliever Chris Hayes (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) ended the game.

Hayes (0-1) took the loss as NU falls to 6-3 on the season. The 'Cats are next in action tomorrow taking on New Mexico State at 10:30 a.m.
